Highgate Painters & Decorators
Exterior painting
An exterior scheme should begin with the materials already on the building. Define the surfaces that need paint, the fabric that should remain exposed and the repairs that must come first.
Discuss your project
Work around the building’s material distinctions
Highgate’s local appraisals describe brick village houses, painted window dressings and the mixed render, tile and timber of later houses. Make an element list for the property: windows, doors, surrounds, rainwater goods, metalwork and previously coated walls. An exterior repaint should not silently become an instruction to coat bare brick or stone.

Inspect the existing coating and repairs
Supply close photographs of peeling finishes, open joints or damaged wood, together with a wider elevation view. Separate decorating preparation from repairs requiring assessment. Specify products only once the surface and retained coating are understood, using the relevant manufacturer’s instructions. Record any trial area or sample needed before the full scheme can be agreed.
Agree colour with the right permissions
For a listed building, a change affecting special interest requires listed building consent; substantial colour changes and new coatings can fall within that test. Check the property’s borough, listing, planning conditions and any applicable Article 4 direction. Bring the relevant advice and approvals into the specification before work starts.

Include the route and working position
Explain where equipment can stand and how materials reach the house. Show slopes, steps, gates and shared routes. Discuss protection, suitable application conditions and how the exterior sequence will be arranged. Any access equipment, parking requirement or separate licence needs a defined responsibility within the proposed work, rather than an assumption about the space outside.
