Joinery & painted details

The edge of a panel, a shutter fold and a window moulding deserve a precise brief. Define the preparation and finish for each piece of joinery, including the parts that need to keep moving.

Identify the piece and its use

List doors and frames, skirtings, shutters, sash windows, stairs and fitted cupboards individually. Clarify whether the work includes both faces of a door or only the internal face of a window. Note sticking parts, damaged timber and fittings to retain. Those observations help separate a painting scope from joinery repair or adjustment.

Retain the profile of the detail

Show mouldings and existing coatings in close photographs. Agree how preparation will preserve their shape, and identify any proposed stripping for separate review. Where the building is listed, removal of historic fabric or changes affecting its character may need consent; that assessment should come before an irreversible preparation method is chosen.

Define colour, sheen and junctions

Consider the window or door in relation to its wall, glazing and hardware. Use an approved sample to establish the intended colour and sheen and record the product system. Identify the meeting point between new paint and retained finishes. On fitted furniture, include shelves, interiors and exposed edges only where those elements are expressly part of the brief.

Make the working sequence practical

Explain which doors, windows or cupboards must remain accessible during the work. Agree responsibility for removing and reinstating fittings where required and discuss the product’s application and curing instructions. For a quotation, send the number and type of elements alongside photographs; a simple window count does not show its size, detail or condition.
